Repo: github.com/blazickjp/arxiv-mcp-server (3.0k★). Install: uv tool install arxiv-mcp-server (stdio) — an HTTP mode is also supported. No auth needed — the arXiv Export API is public and free.
Tools
Search papers by keyword, author or category (search_papers), download a PDF by arXiv ID (download_paper), read content — including LaTeX-source access for exact formulas and citations (read_paper), local caching of downloaded papers.
Agent flow
"Find papers on this topic from the last year and pull their abstracts", "download this paper by ID and show the formula from section 3", "compare the methodology of two papers".
Pricing
Completely free — both the server itself and the arXiv API require no payment or key.
Note
A community project (blazickjp); there's no official arXiv server. Covers only arXiv's own preprints — for paywalled journal articles you'll need a separate source (e.g. the PubMed MCP).
